Carrera Sunglasses
Carrera is one of the most respected names in sunglasses design. Since 1956, Carrera has been one of the chief suppliers of performance-oriented sunglasses to the highest caliber athletes in the world, including Tour de France cyclists, Olympic downhill skiers and automobile racers. In fact, it was only in recent years that Carrera sunglasses decided to expand its focus beyond pure athletics and include regular consumers as well. Today, Carrera is one of the top sunglasses brands in the world, whether you're going to the beach or competing in a World Cup cycling event.
About Carrera Sunglasses
Wilhelm Anger originally founded Carrera eyewear in 1956 after being inspired by one of the most famous automobile races in the world, the Carrera Panamerica. Anger witnessed a lack of serious, performance-oriented eyewear available to athletes and those who demand precision optics and stable, durable frames. This was only the beginning, as Carrera continued to take performance eyewear and innovated some of the biggest breakthroughs in sunglasses technology over the coming decades.
The first major breakthrough occurred in 1964 with the introduction of Carrera sunglasses' patented Optyl frame material. Optyl was roughly 20% lighter than any other thermoplastic material, despite having better elasticity and durability. In the 1970s, Carrera eyewear made another major development by introducing the world's first set of helmet and goggles, ideal for downhill skiers and other demanding extreme athletes.
The Carrera brand opened itself up to an even wider athletic audience in 1981 by introducing sports sunglasses compatible with prescription lenses. For the next three decades, some of the world's best cyclists and Olympic athletes came to rely on Carrera as their eyewear brand of choice.
Finally, in 2008, Carrera brought its line of eyeglasses and Carrera sunglasses to the mainstream markets, with a whole slew of frame designs intended for casual wear, but still including the unique sports-oriented design flourishes that the company became known for during the past five decades of producing athletic eyewear. The line saw a major expansion in 2009 and was finally introduced to the United States in 2010. Since then, the popularity of Carrera sunglasses and eyeglasses has skyrocketed.
