Wilhelm Anger originally founded Carrera eyewear in 1956 after being inspired by one of the most famous automobile races in the world, the Carrera Panamerica. Optyl was roughly 20% lighter than any other thermoplastic material, despite having better elasticity and durability. In the 1970s, Carrera eyewear made another major development by introducing the world's first set of helmet and goggles, ideal for downhill skiers and other demanding extreme athletes.
