About Carrera Eyeglasses

Carrera was founded by Wilhelm Anger in 1956, inspired by the Carrera Panamerica, a famous car race that occurred in South America in the 1950s. Anger's goal was to create a line of performance eyewear, including eyeglasses and sunglasses that could meet the requirements of the most demanding athletes and enthusiasts. Over the years, Carrera has performed extensive research and development in the areas of eyeglass design, technology and manufacturing.

A major development came in 1964, when Carrera Eyeglasses introduced its patented new Optyl material. At the time of its introduction, Optyl weighed 20% less than other thermoplastics, and had excellent stability and elasticity properties. Carrera changed the outdoor sports industry even further in the 1970s with the introduction of the first helmet and goggles set.

Another major breakthrough for Carrera glasses came in 1981, when the company began offering two sports glasses models compatible with prescription lenses. Throughout the 80s, 90s and 00s, Carrera became the most trusted name in athletic eyewear, with everyone from professional cyclists to Olympic athletes relying on Carrera eyeglasses and sunglasses for the most intense competitions.

Perhaps the biggest change in Carrera's development came in 2008, when the company finally decided to begin producing eyeglasses and sunglasses not only for athletes, but for casual use as well.
